Consumption upgrading is driving structural transformation, as the cashmere industry accelerates its shift toward higher value-added segments.

China’s domestic cashmere market is undergoing significant structural shifts. End‑consumer demand is no longer confined to basic warmth; buyers now place greater emphasis on ultra‑fine, soft handfeel, lightweight construction, and versatile styling options, driving rapid growth in the market for high‑count, lightweight cashmere products.
The domestic cashmere consumption market is undergoing significant structural shifts. End‑consumer demand is no longer confined to basic warmth; buyers now place greater emphasis on ultra‑fine hand feel, lightweight construction, and versatile styling options, driving rapid growth in demand for high‑count, lightweight cashmere products. Meanwhile, overseas procurement patterns are also evolving: moving away from primarily sourcing raw cashmere fibers toward increasing the share of yarns, fabrics, and finished goods, with the industry’s value chain shifting from upstream raw materials to midstream advanced processing and downstream finished products.
For a long time, many domestic cashmere enterprises have focused on the raw‑material carding segment, leaving their operating margins vulnerable to fluctuations in raw‑material prices. Within the industry, there is a broad consensus that simply exporting raw cashmere—essentially an unprocessed commodity—offers limited room for profit growth. Expanding into spinning, fabric production, and finished apparel, while building proprietary brands, has emerged as a key strategy for enhancing product value. The Qinghe Cashmere Industrial Cluster is also actively guiding companies to shift from raw‑material processing toward deeper downstream value chains, promoting smart spinning technologies and first‑line integrated knitting equipment, and establishing flexible supply‑chain systems to meet today’s market demand for small‑batch, rapid‑response production.
In the market, leading industry players are deeply invested in the high-end apparel segment, while numerous established domestic manufacturers adopt a dual‑track development model of “raw materials plus deep processing.” On the one hand, they consolidate their businesses in raw materials such as non‑fleece and cashmere slivers, ensuring robust bulk procurement for both domestic and international factories. On the other hand, they expand into value‑added product categories—including cashmere yarns, blended fabrics, knitted garments, and accessories—catering to both industrial‑scale supply and customized finished‑goods orders. At the same time, they are building out their own branded offerings, achieving a balanced business mix that helps hedge against market volatility in any single segment.
From the perspective of market demand, the trend toward market segmentation is becoming increasingly evident. The high-end consumer segment places great emphasis on ultra‑fine fibers, fabric handfeel, and brand‑driven value; the mid‑range market prioritizes cost‑effectiveness and consistent product quality; while the export market demands comprehensive criteria, including delivery lead times, flexible order quantities, and compliance certifications. This underscores the need for manufacturers to move beyond a single market niche and strategically align their production capacity with their target market positioning.
Industry analysis indicates that the cashmere sector faces both opportunities and challenges. The scarcity of raw materials and persistently high prices have long been structural realities, requiring companies to strengthen raw‑material stockpiling and rigorously manage costs. At the same time, by capitalizing on the momentum of consumption upgrading, firms should refine their product portfolios, bolster R&D capabilities, and seamlessly integrate domestic and international markets—thus propelling China’s cashmere industry steadily from a major raw‑material processing hub toward a globally competitive, high‑value‑added manufacturing powerhouse.
